Mink blankets vs standard polyester blankets

This comparison confuses people because “mink” and “polyester” aren’t two different materials — a mink blanket is a polyester blanket. The difference is entirely in construction and finishing, not fibre.

What “mink” actually means

There’s no animal fibre in a mink blanket. The name refers to a finish: polyester yarn knitted (usually on a raschel machine), then raised and sheared to create a dense, brushed pile that mimics the hand-feel of fur. A “standard” or “plain” polyester blanket is the same base fibre without that raising-and-shearing step — a flatter, uncombed surface.

So the real comparison is: raised-and-finished polyester vs plain-woven polyester, and that construction step is what the price difference actually pays for.

Where the difference shows up

Hand-feel. This is the whole point of mink. The raising and shearing step is what creates the soft, dense pile — skip it and you have a functional but plain blanket, which is exactly what a lower-cost plain polyester option is.

Warmth at the same weight. The raised pile traps more air per gram than a flat weave, so a mink blanket generally reads as warmer than a plain polyester blanket of similar weight.

Appearance and print definition. The pile surface takes printed designs differently — colours read richer and patterns hold their edges better on a raised finish than on a flat one, which is why mink is the finish of choice where the printed design is part of the sale.

Durability, if washed correctly. A well-made mink blanket, cared for properly (see our washing guide), holds its pile for years. A plain polyester blanket has less pile to lose in the first place, so it’s more forgiving of a bad wash — one real advantage of the plain option.

Price. Raising and shearing is an extra manufacturing step, so mink costs more to produce than a plain polyester blanket of the same weight. That’s a real cost, not a markup for the name.

When plain polyester is still the right call

• Fixed-budget bulk gifting where per-piece cost matters more than hand-feel, and the blanket is a gesture rather than a considered purchase.
• Utility/institutional use — relief supply, basic hostel stock — where function matters more than finish.
• Very mild climates where the extra warmth-per-gram of a raised pile isn’t needed.

Mink is worth the difference when the blanket is being sold or gifted on its own merits — retail, wedding gifting, premium corporate gifts — where the buyer or recipient will actually touch it before deciding whether it was worth the money.
