What actually matters in a blanket for a baby

A baby blanket is bought differently from every other kind. Nobody is choosing it to match a duvet or to feel substantial in the hand — the questions are softness against the skin, how often it can be washed without falling apart, and whether it’s actually safe to have that close to an infant. That changes which weight and construction make sense.

There’s no animal fibre involved

“Mink” describes a finish, not a material — every mink blanket, ours included, is 100% polyester, knitted and then raised and sheared to build the soft, brushed pile. Weight: lighter is usually right

An adult winter blanket is chosen to be warm. A baby blanket is chosen to not overheat a child who can’t regulate their own temperature as well or push a heavy cover off themselves. That points toward the lighter end of the range, not the heaviest one.

Ply matters more here than almost anywhere else

A baby blanket gets washed on a completely different schedule from an adult one — after most feeds, most naps, most days some weeks. Single ply vs double ply is the difference between a blanket that holds its shape through that washing frequency and one that flattens within a season. Single ply is lighter and drapes softer, which is usually what a parent wants for a young baby; if the same blanket needs to survive near-daily institutional-style washing (a creche or hospital nursery, for instance), a double ply construction earns its keep.

Washing is where a baby blanket actually lives or dies

Correct washing — cold to lukewarm water, mild detergent, no fabric softener, gentle cycle, low heat or air dry — is what keeps the pile soft and prevents pilling over the wash frequency a baby blanket goes through. On sizing

Every product we make ships in one of the standard single- or double-bed sizes — there’s no separate crib-sized product in the range today. In practice, a lighter single-bed blanket like Melody folds down comfortably for pram or crib use; if you need something genuinely smaller, ask us — it’s a minimum-quantity and lead-time conversation rather than an automatic yes, but worth raising.
